When a house holds a lifetime of memories

99 Years Later, He Came Home

Last week, while hosting an open house at 523 16th Ave N. in Nampa, I had a visitor I will never forget. A 99-year-old gentleman walked through the door and told me he had been born in that very house. His name was Harold Dougal, and as we sat and talked, he shared childhood memories of the rooms around us and stories from a life that eventually took him high above Idaho’s mountains. The light in his eyes as he remembered those years was beautiful to see. He was joined by family and friends who clearly loved and respected him, and for a little while, that open house became something much more than real estate—it became a place where nearly a century of memories came alive.

Before he left, Harold gave me a signed copy of his autobiography, Adventures of an Idaho Mountain Pilot. I later learned just how remarkable his story is. Born in Nampa in 1927, Harold became one of Idaho’s best-known backcountry pilots, logging more than 20,000 hours in the air, helping establish remote airfields, and flying people and supplies into places few pilots could safely reach. His book shares the adventures, close calls, hardships, humor, and lessons from a lifetime spent flying Idaho’s rugged backcountry, and his contribution to aviation was formally recognized when he was inducted into the Idaho Aviation Hall of Fame in 2023.

That visit reminded me of something easy to forget when we talk about square footage, price, zoning, or resale value: a home can hold a kind of value that can never be measured on paper. It can hold childhoods, families, celebrations, hardships, and an entire lifetime of stories. I went into that open house thinking I was there to show a property. I left with a signed book, a piece of Idaho history, and a reminder that sometimes the most valuable thing inside a home is the story it has been quietly holding all along.
